The full Beauty of Joseon Toner & Essence range compared
These three bottles may live on the same shelf, but they are not interchangeable. One is the comforting glass of water, one is the clever shake-to-mix balancing step and one is an exfoliating active that deserves a little more respect.

The short answer
Pick the function your routine is missing
If your routine already contains a retinoid, exfoliating serum or acne treatment, Ginseng or Rice Milk will usually be the easier supporting character. Green Plum is not “just toner”; it is another active decision.
The cosmetic science, without the lecture
Essence, toner and exfoliant describe very different experiences
“Toner” and “essence” are product categories, not strict scientific definitions. The ingredient system and the way you use it tell us far more than the name on the bottle.
Humectants are water magnets
Glycerin, hydroxyethyl urea and sodium hyaluronate are humectants: ingredients that help hold water in the upper layers of skin. They can make skin feel plumper and more comfortable, but they are not a replacement for an occlusive moisturiser when your barrier also needs help slowing water loss.
Niacinamide is supportive, not magical
Niacinamide is a form of vitamin B3 with evidence around barrier support, pigmentation and sebum-related benefits. The catch is that results depend on concentration, delivery and consistent use. Its presence on an ingredient list is encouraging; it is not proof that one watery layer will transform every concern.
Powder changes the finish
Glow Rice Milk separates into a watery layer and a powder-rich layer, which is why the bottle needs a good shake. Kaolin can take up surface oil, while the humectant side supplies slip and hydration. That is a formulation strategy for a balanced after-feel, not a promise to permanently shrink pores.
AHA and BHA earn their own lane
Alpha-hydroxy acids are generally associated with loosening bonds between surface cells; salicylic acid is oil-soluble and is often selected for congestion. Useful does not mean limitless. More tingling, more layers and more frequent use do not automatically produce better skin.
Put it into a real routine
What would I choose on an ordinary Tuesday?
Dry, a little dull, easily overwhelmed
Choose Ginseng Essence Water
Press one light layer into slightly damp skin, then follow with moisturiser. If your skin drinks it up and still feels thirsty, adding five more layers may be less useful than choosing a richer moisturiser that slows water loss.
Shiny centre, thirsty edges
Choose Glow Replenishing Rice Milk
Shake until the layers look evenly mixed, then apply a modest amount with your hands. This is the most satisfying option when you want hydration but dislike the gleam or tack that some richer toners leave behind.
Texture and clogged pores
Choose Green Plum carefully
Start on one or two evenings a week rather than making it a morning-and-night ritual immediately. Keep the rest of that evening simple. If your skin is already adapting to a retinoid or another acid, this may be duplication rather than the missing piece.
A very common question
“Can I use the Ginseng Essence and Rice Milk together?”
You can, but “can” and “need to” are different questions. Both contribute a hydrating layer. If you enjoy a multi-step ritual and your skin remains comfortable, layer the thinner Ginseng Essence first and Rice Milk after. If the routine pills, feels sticky or leaves you rushing through sunscreen, choose the one you enjoy most. A shorter routine used consistently beats an impressive routine you avoid.
Three routine roles
What each Beauty of Joseon formula contributes
Watery essence · daily
Ginseng Essence Water
Best fit: dry, dull or mature-feeling skin that wants a light layer before serum and moisturiser.
The current formula brings together humectants, niacinamide, panthenol, allantoin, several ginseng-derived ingredients and sodium hyaluronate. In everyday terms, it is a very light hydrating layer that should disappear neatly under serum, moisturiser and sunscreen.
My take: this is the one I would hand to the person saying, “I want my skin to feel less flat, but I do not want another complicated active.” It is easy to place and hard to overthink.
Dual-layer toner · shake first
Glow Replenishing Rice Milk
Best fit: skin that wants hydration but dislikes a greasy finish, including combination skin with surface dehydration.
Rice extract and amino acids sit alongside glycerin, panthenol, hydroxyethyl urea, kaolin, ceramide NP and sodium hyaluronate. Give it a proper shake: you are remixing the watery and powder-rich layers so the formula that reaches your face is the formula the chemist intended.
My take: the most interesting choice for combination skin—the person whose cheeks want comfort while their T-zone has made completely different plans. It balances finish rather than directly treating acne.
Exfoliating toner · introduce slowly
Green Plum Refreshing Toner: AHA + BHA
Best fit: clogged pores, rough texture and a routine that does not already contain more exfoliation than the skin tolerates.
The brand positions green plum water and mung bean extract alongside AHA and BHA. Those acids change the personality of the product completely: this is a treatment step, not simply a fresh splash of hydration.
My take: helpful when roughness and congestion are real concerns, but it should not sneak into an already busy active routine. Begin slowly, pay attention to dryness and wear sunscreen.

How we would choose
Do not buy all three just because they share a shelf
- Start with the routine gap. If the skin simply needs a comfortable water-based layer, Ginseng Essence Water is more direct than an acid toner.
- Use Rice Milk for balance, not magic pore shrinking. Its powder-and-hydration concept may suit combination skin, but pores do not permanently open or close.
- Treat Green Plum as an active. Reduce frequency if stinging, persistent redness or dryness develops, and avoid casually stacking it with several other exfoliants.
Review boundary
This guide uses current Beauty of Joseon product information, ingredient lists and established cosmetic-science context. Brand claims are useful background but are not the same as large independent comparative trials. Check your own packaging because formulas can change, and reduce or stop any product that causes persistent stinging, redness or scaling.
