How PLLA collagen stimulation works
PLLA is not simply a thicker hyaluronic-acid filler. Its visible effect develops as the tissue responds to biodegradable particles and forms new collagen over time.

A controlled tissue response recruits cells involved in remodelling, including fibroblasts.
New collagen fibres develop gradually while the particles are broken down.
The collagen network matures after the carrier-water fullness has long since settled.
What happens immediately?
PLLA products are reconstituted before use. Early fullness includes the water used for that preparation and treatment-related swelling, so it can reduce over the first days. That early look is not the final collagen result.
What happens over the following months?
The particles create a controlled foreign-body response involving macrophages, fibroblasts and new type-I collagen formation. PLLA is gradually hydrolysed and metabolised, while the collagen network develops and matures.
PLLA versus HA filler
PLLA / Sculptra
Gradual biostimulation
Used for progressive collagen and structural-support goals. It is planned by vial and course, develops over time and cannot be dissolved with hyaluronidase.
Hyaluronic-acid filler
Immediate material support
Places a gel for more immediate shape, contour or volume. Product families behave differently and suitable HA filler may be dissolvable with hyaluronidase.
Why can a course be needed?
One vial is not a universal full-face quantity. Tissue quality, degree of change, treatment area, age, product protocol and the desired endpoint affect vial count and session spacing. More product is not automatically better.
Risks and limitations
- Bruising, swelling, tenderness, asymmetry and temporary palpable product can occur.
- Persistent papules or nodules, inflammatory reactions, infection and unwanted contour are recognised risks.
- Vascular injury is uncommon but potentially serious with any injectable placement.
- PLLA is not an instant fix and does not behave like a reversible HA gel.
- Preparation, placement, distribution and aftercare are tailored to the selected PLLA product and treatment area.
